Freedom from Fear: On Black Childhood and Other Dangers
On Friday, November 21, the UK College of Law will host "Freedom from Fear: On Black Childhood and Other Dangers," the James and Mary Lassiter Distinguished Visiting Professor Conference.

Professor Anthony FarleyArtwork by AstridAnthony Paul Farley, the 2014 Lassiter Distinguished Visiting Professor, will lead a group of prominent speakers through the day's events.
"Childhood bears a unique relationship to time. It is in childhood that we first learn to express ourselves. It is in childhood that we first learn to look for meaning in the universe. It is in childhood that we first learn that our needs will be met. It is in childhood that we first learn how to be kind and brave. If we do not learn these freedoms –freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear– as children, then we may never learn them. If democracy, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously stated in 1941, is built on these 'four essential freedoms,' then childhood is the head cornerstone.

What of the stone the builders refused? Our conference will focus on the four freedoms and race. Black childhood is in danger. What is freedom of speech without the right to an education? What is freedom of worship amidst nihilistic erasures of black childhood? What is freedom from want when most of black childhood is lived below the poverty line? What is freedom from fear when black childhood is itself feared? Democracy requires these questions to be answered, and childhood’s relationship to time means that there is such a thing as too late. As academics and activists from all over the nation, we gather together to address these urgent questions of race, childhood, and democracy."
- Anthony Paul Farley
