 Lexington, Kentucky, is a city of over 250,000 people surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the United States. In addition to its position as the world center for the thoroughbred industry, Lexington is home to major industries such as Toyota USA and Lexmark International. This combination of clean industries, scenic horse farms and the ambience of a University town is unique to Lexington.
The Bluegrass is beautiful in each of the four seasons, and many of our students take advantage of that beauty in a variety of outdoor sports. Bicycling, hiking, canoeing, running, kayaking, caving and rock climbing are popular. The University has a new student athletics facility with a running track, climbing wall and state-of-the-art fitness equipment. UK also has excellent facilities for tennis, swimming, basketball, and other sports. There are a number of public golf courses in Lexington, and the Kentucky State Park System provides a variety of locales for hiking, camping, boating and mountain biking. Keeneland Race Track is a popular destination for thoroughbred racing fans during its fall and spring meets.
Historic beauty is another facet of the Bluegrass region. If you drive in any direction from Lexington, you are surrounded by restored homes and farms. Also nearby is the college community of Berea, Kentucky, one of the nation's best-known arts and crafts centers.
The Lexington music scene is typical of that in large college towns, with local groups and national concert tours performing both on and off campus. In addition to the many bars, restaurants and dance clubs, there are a number of local cafes, coffee houses and bookstores that are popular with UK Law students. If you like movies, you will enjoy the restored Kentucky Theater downtown, showing second-run, classic and art house movies.
The Lexington legal community is centered in downtown near the local and federal courthouses. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky is headquartered in Lexington, along with the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District. State and local courts also convene in Lexington, with the Supreme Court of Kentucky and the rest of state government located nearby in Frankfort, the state capital.
Lexington offers a variety of cultural and other amenities not available in smaller or non-University towns, without the traffic, high rents, high crime rates and other problems of larger metropolitan areas. If you are considering applying to UK Law and are not familiar with the Bluegrass, you should plan a visit to Lexington and the College of Law.
