Congressman Andy Barr Speaks at College of Law
Mar 21 2013 5:02PM

Congressman Andy Barr (2001) spoke at the College of Law in an open forum with students on Wednesday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m. about his experiences during his first three months as a freshman Congressman on Capitol Hill.

Before taking questions from students, Barr expressed his appreciation for being able to promote so many of Kentucky's "signature" state interests, such as the equine and bourbon industries. He gave a recap of some of the issues facing the Congress during the recent spate of financial crises.

Barr is a 1992 graduate of Henry Clay High School. In 1996, he graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Philosophy. From 1996 through 1998, Barr entered public service for the first time as a Legislative Assistant to U.S. Congressman Jim Talent (R-MO), where he staffed the Congressman’s service on the Speaker’s Health Care Reform Task Force. In 2001, Barr graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he was chosen to compete on the Moot Court National Team.

In 2004, Congressman Barr joined the administration of newly-elected Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher (who represented the Sixth Congressional District from 1998 until 2003) ultimately rising to the position of Deputy General Counsel to the Governor. Barr returned to his Lexington-based private law practice in 2007 before defeating Ben Chandler in the 2012 Congressional election, and taking the oath of office as the new United States Representative for Kentucky's Sixth Congressional District on January 3, 2013.
